    ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION
    January 6, 2018

In each century, education has found a way to reach the masses. In the 21st century, the answer lies in artificial intelligence. For years, there have been murmurs about robots molding the next generation and taking over every aspect of teaching and learning. With children and adults increasingly using tablets and coding becoming part of national curricula worldwide, technology is becoming an integral part of classrooms, just like chalk and blackboards. More importantly, it will allow learners to strengthen their skills and education as education and artificial intelligence begin to have a partnership that will grow in the years to come.

One of the main areas where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is having a massive impact is personalized learning. More and more companies are investing in adaptive learning systems where AI is central to how these systems work. They can quickly adapt to each student’s individual learning needs and can target instruction based on their strengths and weaknesses, meaningless work for teachers, and a more meaningful learning experience for students. Another way these systems can help is to identify instruction gaps in the course content based on student performance on assessments. For example, suppose a significant percentage of students answer a question incorrectly. In that case, AI can zero in on the specific information or concepts that students are missing so that educators can deliver targeted improvements in materials and methods. So in many ways, they are informing the students and informing the instructor at the same time.

There are also investments being made in intelligent tutoring systems that provide help to the student in many ways. What about the role of teachers? Let us be clear; AI will be central to the next-gen learning systems. AI can take over tasks like grading, help students improve learning, and even substitute for real-world tutoring. But they will not replace teachers. Instructors will become more like facilitators. Teachers will supplement AI lessons, assist students struggling, and provide human interaction and hands-on experiences for students.

More and more digital publishing services providers, content creators, and educators are investing in creating computer-supported collaborative learning systems to provide better insights with the aid of artificial intelligence. They can search, select, administer, and score test questions based on a student’s multiple skills and abilities. The testing process is shorter, scores are more accurate, and decisions are more efficient than ever before. With these learning platforms, they can reduce the cost of item development and create a vast pool of psychometrically valid questions that will improve student performance.

With the rise of AI, education will improve, but the cost of education may come down as a result. The data provided to teachers and students will be fair and accurate. Where AI is going in education could be clubbed with the realms of virtual reality, augmented reality, and machine learning. The possibilities are endless, and the sky is the limit. The future is here, and it is time for educators everywhere to start embracing it.
