    ADAPTIVE LEARNING FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
    November 8, 2017

Adaptive learning is becoming one of the most exciting and talked about technologies in the education sector. The higher education community is finding that adaptive learning systems can accommodate student differences in an increasingly diverse population. What many educators are learning is that added flexibility is an essential component of student success.

Adaptive assessment testing can provide an appropriate challenge up to, but not below or beyond, a student’s academic capacity. The development of innovative adaptive technology features to meet institutions’ needs is the most critical factor in higher education. The just-released 2017 Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium identifies adaptive learning technologies as one of the most significant technological developments for higher education.

Personalized learning takes into account that every student, whether in K-12 or higher education, is unique. It also helps in getting to know a student’s preferences and learning style. Content is delivered online, where adaptive technology assists a student in learning new concepts. Adaptive learning analytics is the process of using data to improve learning and teaching. It is defined by how learner performance data is used. Adopting digital classroom technologies that define higher education makes the learning process easier for both students and faculty.

Adaptive learning has the potential to transform student performance analytics by providing students with self-paced, individualized learning experiences. Learning environments with adaptive technology can support the learner in new ways. Every student is given the time to master a subject, rather than being bound by a certain number of hours every week or month. Colleges are employing an adaptive learning environment that integrated assignments, grading, and course content saw a 15% increase in the number of students that earned A’s and B’s.

Adaptive learning technology is individualized for each student, assessing the student’s current grasp of a theory and guiding them towards the next related concept. Adaptive learning systems collect and use performance analytics to customize the learning platform to the student’s needs. Adaptive learning offers intrinsic student data such as; when they logged in, how long they were on, what they did, what they repeated, and more.

This highlights the potential that adaptive learning solutions implemented in educational institutions positively impact the cost, quality, and access to multiple platforms. If colleges and universities can realize the full promise and potential of these adaptive learning solutions, they will have achieved something that is the hallmark of real innovation. More institutions are employing these adaptive platforms to significant effect.

For instance, smart adaptive tests and learning analytics hold great potential in improving various aspects of the student experience, from boosting retention rates to identifying struggling students to enable adaptive learning development. Adaptive learning will assist higher educational institutes who are ramping up their efforts to pinpoint the students who are likely to drop out and improve graduation rates.

Adaptive learning is transforming not only the way students learn but also the way professors teach. Adaptive technologies at any scale are available and ready to use. An appropriate opportunity exists for implementing an adaptive learning experience for almost any university or college. Education is changing, and so are student needs. The universities that adapt will stay ahead of the pact and benefit their students in the process.
